The series focuses on the two main casts, Anna Faris as Christy Plunkett and Allison Jenny as Bonnie Plunkett, Christy’s mother. Christy gave birth to her first child, daughter Violet played by Sadie Calvano when she was just 17. Now she is a single mother raising her daughter and her young son Roscoe, played by Blake Garrett Rosenthal, by herself. Both Plunkett and her mother Bonnie are suffering from drug addiction and alcoholism but they are trying their best to recover from it by attending Alcoholics Anonymous gatherings.

As the tv show ended we didn’t get to see the main cast of the series Christy Plunkett. She appeared till season seven but was totally missing in its last eight seasons that started on November 5, 2020. Why didn’t she appear and why did Christy leave Mom? Let’s get the answer to this question.

Yes, Anna Faris who was playing the lead role of the series, Christy Plunkett left the show before the start of season eight. So the main question is why did she leave?

When the news of her sudden exit from the show came up before the start of season eight in 2020, many believed that the cause might be for covid reasons but Anna Faris gave her explanation for leaving the show in the middle.

“The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career. I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience.” Then she further added, “while my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”

The actress will be in an expected comedy movie Summer Madness where she is said to be playing the role of twins and it is one of her new big projects. So as she mentioned she wants to grab and explore more new opportunities for which she has to leave the show.

It was a huge shock for the whole production and the casting team of the show and for the Mom fans. Another of the show’s leading ladies Allison Jenny expressed herself on Anna Faris’s departure from the show with Entertainment Tonight,

“It’s a huge loss for the show to not have Anna because she was part of creating a character, Christy, that everyone fell in love with, who was so lovable and warm and gullible and funny and we will miss her so much.”

Another statement of Warner Bros. TV and Chuck Lorre productions stated:

“From the inception of Mom, Anna was the first and only choice for the role of Christy. We are so proud of the stories we have been able to tell during Anna’s seven years with us. We wish Anna all the best, and we thank her for her beautiful portrayal.”

So what comes next after the main lead is gone, is how did the show manage to end its last season without the main lead.

What Happened to Christy on “Mom”? How did the Series End?

In the seventh season, Christy was shown to be focusing and continuing her law schooling. So what happened in season eight? The last season of the series ended with the absence of her character. At the start of the season, Bonnie and Adam were seen to be returning from the airport where they dropped Christy, who is flying to the east coast to pursue her law school.

Later Bonnie made it clear where she is and what she is doing. She said that Christy is going on a full scholarship to pursue her law career at Georgetown Law school. And this is how she gets her own happy ending in the show.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the showrunner Gemma Becker answered how the show will explain Christy’s exit in their last season. She said,

“Although our show has killed characters off in the past, we never considered this as an option for Christy.”

She explained that their audience has been rooting for Christy for seven seasons and that loss felt like it would be too devastating for them and for our other characters. She further added:

“She has been working toward her dreams for a while and we feel like the audience will be happy for her. The character of Christy will live on and we will continue to get updates on what she is up to and how her moving on will affect Bonnie.”
